    • Project Name: Falling Intelligence
    • Project Description: Every day people have a very real concern with regards to elderly loved ones falling at home. Many of our aging population end up losing their independence out of fear of having a fall and not being able to notify anyone for help. I’ve personally known older people who have fallen and weren’t able to get themselves help until many hours later. One even had to endure a cold night in their front yard until a neighbor found them in the morning and was able to help.

Our project is to help alleviate some of that concern hopefully allowing loved ones maintain their independence for longer. We’ve prototyped a device is worn on the belt that can detect when a person falls and notify someone for help. Using Azure machine learning, we’ve created an artificial intelligence model that can detect a fall with 85% accuracy and 100% precision. When a fall is detected, a text message is sent to notify a caregiver so that they can investigate.

Some possible future enhancements could be a panic button in case of an emergency or a false negative fall, a phone application to help set the device up and that can be monitored by caregivers, or a GPS locator in case of wandering caused by dementia or to help find the person in need of help.
